Statement by President Nursultan Nazarbayev on the results of the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

December 15, 2015

Kazakhstan welcomes the adoption on December 12, 2015 in Paris of the final document of the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Delegates from 196 UN member states have done a great amount of work and demonstrated once again unity in the face of modern challenges and threats. We also praise the efforts and the contribution of the United Nations into this complex negotiation process over many years.

Addressing global climate change is one of the key conditions for sustainable development, poverty reduction and achievement of social and economic well-being of all countries of the world

The adoption of a new universal agreement on climate change reaffirms the determination of the UN member-states to prevent environmental degradation by holding global average temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Kazakhstan, which tackles both national and regional environmental problems, attaches special importance to this agreement.

We are firmly committed to the development of close cooperation with all the members of the international community in this field, as well as to the goals and objectives endorsed at the climate summit in Paris.

In turn, Kazakhstan is ready to fulfill its commitments and to contribute to the implementation of the new agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Our country’s important contribution to it is EXPO 2017 to be held in Astana, themed Future Energy, which is directly related to the objectives of the conference on climate.

I would like to thank the French government for the contribution into the preparation and hosting a major summit that will impact all mankind in the new millennium.
